1891 Fredonia Opera House
The 1891 Fredonia Opera House, located in Fredonia, NY, is an historic building from the 19th century, designed by Enoch Curtis in what has been termed "Queen Anne eclectic style". Over the past 115 years, the Opera House was host to many musicians and vaudeville acts, including a reported visit from the Marx brothers. Groucho and the gang were so incensed at the poor reception of their brand of "city humor" by the audience that they worked the name of the village into one of their movies, Duck Soup. In that film, the unflattering portrayal of the fictional country of Freedonia was their response to the hospitality they received in Fredonia, NY. The Opera House fell in to increasing disrepair as a movie theatre in the 1970s and early 1980s. The village raised a bond to repair and restore the Opera House in the late 1980's. Today it is a vital cultural center of the village, with live performances, art cinema and festivals, like the Bach and Beyond Music Festival (Spring 2007) and Fredonia Storytelling Festival (Oct 13, 14, 2006). The web site uses images of the restored architectural details to convey the great care and support that the community has shown for this building in the last 20 years. Fittingly, the Opera House is also host to an annual Marx Brothers' film festival in the spring.
