The Institute of Computer Science (ICS) is an autonomous institute of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). ICS is Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) Center of Excellence in Information Technology Education. ICS has strong undergraduate and graduate (Diploma, MIT, MS and PhD) degree programs in computer science and information technology with more than 30 faculty members, and about 600 students. ICS is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and extension. ICS is home to the first and only Academician in Computer Science.

Four ICS Research Posters to be Presented at the 30th NAST Annual Scientific Meeting

Four ICS research posters have been accepted for presentation at the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) after a rigorous review by the committee members of NAST's different technical forums. The 30th ASM will be held at the Manila Hotel on 9-10 July 2008. The research posters are:

  1. Training-Less Optical Recognition of Printed Characters Using Equation Fitting by R.M. Matugas and J.P. PABICO. Forum: Chemical, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences Division.
  2. Visualizing Relationships in Hypertext Documents Using Quasi-Hierarchical Graphs in 3D Hyperbolic Space by T.J.K.P. Monserrat and J.P. PABICO. Forum: Engineering Sciences and Technology Division.

Real-time Video Analysis

CMSC 191: Real-time Video AnalysisAnnouncing the offering of Real-time Video Analysis (CMSC 191: Special Topic) for the 1st Semester 2008-2009.

Description

The course is an introduction to digital image processing with special emphasis on real-time processing of image sequences directly coming from camera hardware. This image sequence is a large river of data, requiring very efficient methods that can process the data faster than its arrival.

Six ICS research papers to be presented at various scientific conferences

Six ICS research papers will be presented at various national and international scientific conferences to be held in January to March 2008. These are:

  1. Recognition of Gene Acceptor Site via Ensemble Boosting by J.R.L. Micor, E.R.E. Mojica and J.P. Pabico to be presented as poster paper at the 10th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences (EuAsC2S-10) in Manila on 07-11 January 2008.
  2. Grain Classification and Grading Based on Fourier Descriptor by F.M. Moncada and V.Y. Mariano to be presented as oral paper at the 8th Philippine Computing Science Congress (PCSC 2008) in University of the Philippines Diliman on 23-24 February 2008.
