Photons: a band to watch in 2009

There’s a new group from San Fransisco called Photons. This band has grown into an eight piece, equally four guys and four girls that feature the bassoon and glockenspiel with a regular rock outfit. They recently released a six track self-titled Photons EP and it’s well worth the $6.

“Drummer/songwriter Calvin Liu formed San Francisco’s Photons in the spring of 2008 with the original intention of making indie pop that might sound like “a more cheerful Joy Division” — a simple idea that would evolve dramatically as the band’s size continued to grow.”

In the short time Photons have been together, they have garnered praise from bloggers, calling their sound “peppy jangle pop,” “eclectic pop,” and “energized lo-fi pop.” We agree that this is a band to keep an eye on in 2009.

Photons - This Must Be Love

Photons - Photons EP tracklisting:

1. This Must Be Love
2. What Do You Want From Me
3. Something Left to Live For
4. Cease and Desist
5. Animals
6. Goodbye For Now

The Twilight Sad release tour EP

The Twilight Sad are releasing a limited edition CD with Fat Cat Records, “to help fund their tour with Mogwai.” Titled The Twilight Sad Killed My Parents And Hit The Road, the disc will be out on CD and digital on December 8. The title of the disc continues the reflection of a homicidal adolescent in rural Scotland drowned in their dark noise-driven sounds.

The eleven track disc is “a collection of covers, instrumentals, previously unreleased material and live tracks recorded at the ABC, Glasgow.” Several songs are covers of Joy Division, The Smiths, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Andy MacFarlane recorded The Wea-ther Is Bad for Semiconductor’s Brilliant Noise, “a film pieced together from archive NASA footage of the sun’s surface.” (Wikipedia)

Seabear’s Sindri Mar Sigfusson is back with a solo project

Seabear founder, Sindri Mar Sigfusson, is back with a solo project called Sin Fang Bous. Sindri’s debut will be released in Iceland on December 5, and in the US on February 17 (2009). The digital version has already sprung among many online stores. 26 year old Sindri self-produced Clangour in his home studio while working on the next Seabear album (source).

The album is called Clangour and the twelve driving tracks emphasize layered electronic sounds than the folk-pop sound that defines Seabear. The acoustic aspects are still there none the less, making Sin Fang Bous’ Clangour quite a joy to listen to. If you have a love affair for Icelandic bands, Sindri’s new project will only feed your obsession.

A 7″ with two songs from the album came out on October 26 and is still available. The vinyl version has two songs from Sin Fang BousClangour: Advent In Ives Garden and Clangour And Flutes.
