Beefeater's holocaust

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
A recent episode of Boston Legal featured a courtroom drama where a farmer filed suit in order to be able to test all of her herd for BSE1/vCJD, the agent which causes "mad cow" disease (otherwise known a bovine spongioform encephalopathy) in cows and variant Creutzfeld-Jacob disease in unfortunate beefeaters. In TV land, the farmer won and was allowed to test her herd and advertise the results. In reality, the USDA prohibits testing of cattle for BSE (except by the USDA) and the FDA has refused to even allow applications by biotech/pharma companies for newer generation quick blood and tissue tests for BSE.

Why the Big 3 Bailout is Bullshit: Cadillacs Made in China

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
First, they say that between 160,000 and 3 million manufacturing jobs are on the line, but then turn around and blame the unions (the organization that represents those workers). In fact, foreign (mainly Japanese) automakers employ almost as many Americans as the "Big 3" do (113,000). Helping GM, Ford, and Chrysler could actually hurt those American auto-workers at non-Big 3 factories. Moreover, even according to optimistic estimates, the crappy clunkers Detroit has been making for years will be far less feasible in the coming worldwide depression than the smaller, cheaper more sensible Japanese brand cars which are (by % of parts/labor) MORE AMERICAN than the "American" cars. (GM parts are often made in China, whereas cars like the Honda Accord are 70% American-made).

FreeBSD Owes Apple Big

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
The other day, while booting my eight-core 3.2 GHz Mac Pro with 32 GB RAM, I watched my system startup messages (nvram boot-args="-v") and thought of Darwin's origins at NeXT as a pastiche of academic research and hacker hobby. Darwin has come so far and exhibits the best of long-term software engineering. But while thinking of how far Darwin has come, I also thought of all it has given back to FreeBSD. By the time my Mac had loaded my desktop, I was at work researching just how much FreeBSD owes Apple.

Let The Games Begin

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
First off, I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG. So much for predictions of a year and a half ago. Looking back it's easy to see what happened. There is a collective sigh of relief throughout the U.S. and most of the world as Obama became President-elect Obama. Even so there is still 40+% of America that voted for McCain. President-elect Obama's calls for national unity will likely not last more than 30 days past his inauguration. I hope I am wrong.

The Silver Lining for California's Gay Marriage Ban

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
On election day, Californians narrowly approved Proposition 8, an initiative to amend the state constitution to include "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid."  Undoubtedly this vote was a setback for gay rights throughout the country, but upon closer inspection there is a lot of silver lining in the results.

I'd never vote for a black President

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
The Presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain ended just like the polls said it would, and now, come January, we're going to have the first black president in the White House. I know this because the headline article at Fox News is titled Obama Wins White House, Becomes First Black President. Oh Boy!

Official K5 2008 Election Poll

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
Election Day arrives tomorrow. Since we're human, we try to predict the future. Usually it's pretty easy: fall follows summer, which is followed by winter. It's not a good practice to plant your seeds in the fall, and our future-seeing abilities alerts us to better courses of action. Inside: The Official K5 U.S. Election Poll and a book passage on future-seeing. If the election goes to the courts à la 2000, I'm sure they'll decide by looking at our humble poll.

One conservative's case for Barack Obama

On The Violation Of The Law Of Conservation

kuro5hin.org - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:25
I find myself challenged by a puzzle whose solution seems completely beyond my grasp. Perhaps you can give me a clue. This evening I went to the Borders Books and Music at the McCarthy Ranch shopping center in Milpitas, California. There I purchased a compact disc, Hello Love by The Be Good Tanyas. Afterwards I went to the Seattle's Best Coffee there in the bookstore and had a large coffee and a hot and rather tasty Little Italy Ciabatta. The puzzle that so flummoxes me is that for several days I've had to watch all my expenses with extreme caution, because I am absolutely busted until I get paid on Thursday morning. It was going to be everything I could do to cover the monthly rent on our storage shed in Halifax, which will be charged to my debit card on Monday - tomorrow, and well before I get paid. Or was busted: I'm completely unable to fathom where I got the money for the CD and the tasty snack. Yet there it is: I did get the money. Help me out here. I'm begging you.

Evergreen goes NOT FOR PROFIT!!!

WordPress - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:20

After watching the troubles that our friends on Roatan are facin, we have decided for conduct our business operation in a way that helps out in the best possible way. So we will quote all systems for Humanitarian organizations in the Bay Islands on a “Not for Profit” basis. This way we can help electrify all of the clinics on the island with solar power within five years. And we may be able to help more! based upon individual credentials, we can go to our suppliers and ask for further discounts on a case by case basis!

A cheaper system does not mean a “cheap” system, our humanitarian work gets even more closely looked at by our team of engineers on the “Solar Panel”

All of our other projects will receive the very best pricing, and design service possible.

happy birthday, the fairytale of tiarakami!!

WordPress - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 19:05

yeah rite.

fyuuhhh

capek, lelah, namun tetap bersemangat

semangat sekolah

semangat bermain

semangat membuat blog!

Tadinya gw pikir, ngapain coba buat blog, emang siapa yang mau baca.

Tapi buktinya, gw membaca blog2 temen2 gw.

Kamu mungkin?

yeah, dulu saya masih pake ‘gw’ sekarang gak lagi. tapi yang penting, bukan ‘gw’ ato ’saya’ tapi niat saya bikin blog.

mau menginspirasi orang? beuh, setelah diliat liat lagi, emang blog saya isinya apa ya? apa yang bisa menginspirasi orang?

coba dilihat lihat lagi. slama ini, isi blog saya apa ya?

dari ngomongin ‘pacar pacar’ saya, curhat curhat gak jelas tentang gebetan saya, ngomongin bola, ngomongin american idol, opini seenak saya, dan kegiatan kegiatan normal seorang remaja…

apa yang menginspirasi ya?

sebelum menjawab pertanyaan itu, diam2 blog saya menyimpan berbagai cerita lho. hmm, coba kita lihat beberapa fun facts dari blog saya ini….

nama

sempet ganti nama. awalnya sih berjudul tiarakami’s fairytale. tapi setelah didenger denger lagi, kok agak2 gak enak ya. tiarakami’s itu kok kedengeran kaya ’senin kamis’ ya?? akhirnya setelah pertimbangan panjang (haha. gak juga sih), saya ganti deh jadi the fairytale of tiarakami. sama juga artinya.

kenapa fairytale? kenapa tiarakami?

satu, kalo saya nulis ‘tiara’ doang, banyak yg namanya tiara. kalo saya nulis lengkap ‘indah mutiara kami’ ntar saya dipanggil indah. so, ambil jalan tengah. tiarakami. kedua, kenapa fairytale, karena sampe detik ini saya masih percaya fairytale. bahwa semua orang have their own happy ending.

url

url blog saya sebenernya http://tiarakami.wordpress.com iya saya pake wordpress. kalo kalian berpikir, ‘loh, ini blog yang gw buka kok http://tiarakami.co.cc ?? sama gak nih?’ tenang tenang. tulisan yang kamu dapet langsung dari laptop akyuu kok. hahaha. saya gak beli domain. ini domain gratisan. kenapa bikin domain baru? biar lebih singkat aja kalo nulis. hehe

rumahblogger

yup, tanpa jasa rumahblogger, blog saya gak akan dikunjungi orang sebanyak ini. sejak saya tahu bena dari blognya raditya dika, trus si bena bikin rumahblogger, trus saya ikutan, trus saya banyak blogwalkin, baru deh banyak orang ngajak tukeran link dan komen2 di post saya. salah satu bukti konkritnya adalah orang ini… kenal lewat RB. ternyata anak ITB. ternyata saya keterima di ITB. ternyata suka chelsea. dan ternyata saya baru aja ketemu dia tadi. setelah kenal lewat dunia maya sejak lama… hehehe. hei, iyuth!

blogger itb a.k.a GOBLOG!

phew! smua orang punya blog.

wish list

kalo kamu buka page ‘wish list’ saya, pasti ngeliat ini deh

  • menyelesaikan karya tulis dengan baik bukan cuma baik, tapi “Amat Baik”
  • lulus SMA asik asik lulus
  • keterima di itb gak nyangka lho! hebat!
  • bisa ngerapiin rak buku gw
  • kenalan sama Mr. H

banyak yg bertanya tanya. siapa sih Mr. H ituu?? sosok misterius apa itu?

he’s my fling. yep, just a fling. suka suka an doan. seru2an. tapi seru. hahaha. baca cerita lengkap tentang dia di sini.

so, apa kabar mr. H?? kabar terbaru yg saya dapet (via facebook), dia keterima FK UI…!! lewat UMB. ckckckck. ooh my fling. hebat banget sih lo. hahaha. and, yes, ampe sekarang pun saya gak pernah kenala official ama dia. saya aja gak yakin dia inget ama saya.

contamination

jadi inget pas saya wawancara cakru 8eh tadi sore. alien, sara, mueng, ama ayesh ampe udah capek kali ya dengerin saya cerita. ditanya apa, saya bilang dulu inti paragrafnya. lalu nyambung ampe ke mana mana. hahahaha.

happy 1st birthday, the fairytale of tiarakami

semoga panjang umur, tetap dikunjungi banyak orang, dan tetap setia menemani indah mutiara kami.

ciao!!

Fair Trade?

Technorati: rss aggregator - Thu, 11/20/2008 - 18:49
I just went shopping and while browsing the isles, I ran into a newly build and rather small section containing some products labeled "OFT" which stands for Oxfam Fair Trade. Truth be said, I never bought such products before, but was somehow intrigued by a 1 liter bottle of orange juice today, priced at reasonable €1,29 + 0,20 for the glass bottle (which will be refunded when the empty bottle is returned). Curious - as I usually am - I went over to the juice section to compare the price on re
