Play Ball, Baby!

I have to make this brief, as I’m getting ready for a day OUT of baseball. So, my ramblings, in no particular order: * Johnny Damon botching that play yesterday was huge, on many levels. I never want to wish someone injured, but his being taken out of the game, possibly, really helped out. * The Red Sox take two from the Yankees, regardless of the standings, always makes for good baseball watching! * I missed Bronson hit a triple get a hit that landed him on third thanks to an error ... All right, folks

SOMEONE out there must have video of Bronson singing “God Bless America” yesterday! This I absolutely have to see!  ... More ...

ABC Video Player - No Links

ABC Video Player - No Links, originally uploaded by stevegarfield. Here's a screen shot of my mom on ABC News. Here's the video of my mom in the ABC Video Player. This is great! There is a problem with the ABC media player though, no links. It's hard to imagine the reason that they neglect to link the video to the original ABC World News blog post with more background information to the story AND a link to my mom's blog. That's videoblogging, video on a blog. I know this media player isn't ac... More ...

Nature’s Fireworks

Did you sleep in this morning after a wild night of partying on the Esplanade watching the 4th of July fireworks? If you did, this is the natural fireworks provided by Mother Nature herself that you missed this morning. Watching it with me was a 13 week old kitten and about 10,000 birds. Good times. [...] ... fireworks

The lavish setting: a 500 square foot private roof deck overlooking the Charles River. Below us, Storrow Drive. Beyond that, the Esplanade flooded with people. Beyond that, the enormous fireworks barge, the City of Cambridge, and the vast, open sky. It is a gourmet affair. The food is exquisite, the company (I am told) "important", and the wine delicious. When the fireworks finally start popping overhead they are so close, the ones with trickling glittery tendrils seem to spill all the way over ... More ...

Three cheers for the red, white, and blue

We had quite the lovely 4th despite a rather dubious start to the afternoon. Everyone had the idea that hanging out with friends would be a better evening than eating Mom's brisket and seeing the fireworks. Fortunately Mom (that would be me) has the final say, so we piled into the car with the chairs, blankets, food, and various entertainment sources and headed off to the park. Arriving early, we ... Happy 4th, my fellow Americans

It's bullet points for you today: DICK Cheney was in town early this morning to get a special ride on the USS Constitution and to watch a bunch of people sworn in as new American Citizens. Damn, nobody bashed into his motorcade or anything. What a bummer. Jesse Helms died. WAHOO! It's about frigging time. My God, what a blight on the American political scene. When I lived in North Carolina I ... More ...

Changing your mind is ... unpatriotic?

You're going to see a lot of this, unfortunately. McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers couldn't manage a comment on Obama's shift on Iraq without attacking his patriotism. Here is Rogers in the New York Times: There is nothing wrong with changing your mind when the facts on the ground dictate it. Indeed, the facts have changed because of the success of the surge that John McCain advocated for years and Barack Obama opposed in a position that put politics ahead of country. That last bit is so a... More ...

Happy Fourth from the North Shore

No great claims for this video, but there are more fireworks here than you're likely to see in the rain tonight. Danvers traditionally has the most spectacular fireworks display on the North Shore, and last night was no exception. ... More ...

Dean screamed

Why am I posting the most overplayed clip in American political history? Because Paul Krugman today writes in the New York Times, "Howard Dean didn't scream." Krugman adds: "Again and again we've had media firestorms over supposedly revealing incidents that never actually took place." Yes, we have. And I can go along with his other examples: Krugman correctly points out that Al Gore never claimed to have invented the Internet, Hillary Clinton did not say she was continuing to campaign because Ba... 1000 Words - 4th of July Parade 2008

Happy 4th of July! The parade just went by my apartment an hour ago. Now there's a speech of some sort being given outside the old state house. I hope everyone has a great 4th of July. Stay dry, eat lots of bbq, etc. And this from my friend Kevin: "The 4th of July honors the actions of our founding father, George Jefferson, who so bravely did row his boat across the Potomac to cut down the British tax collectors' cherry tree 500 years ago. These exploits were immortalized in the National Anthe... More ...

The 4th of July Friday Megalinks

Ken from Fang's Bites with the Friday megalinks. I hope your 4th is going well wherever you are. Starting with your weekend viewing then we'll see how many media columns we actually have on this holiday 4th. Weekend Viewing Picks Red Sox-Yankees and Breakfast at Wimbledon dominate the viewing this weekend. The Red Sox-Yankees take precedence on the national broadcasts this weekend meaning NESN will not have any of the games. On Saturday, Fox25 and 64 will have Red Sox-Yankees at 3:55 p.m. with e... Afternoon Baseball

Hopefully everyone has a fun and safe Fourth of July. I’ll be doing the family thing and waiting for 1:05pm and the carnage I hope one Joshua Patrick Beckett will unleash on the Yankees. Today is George Steinbrenner’s birthday. I think a loss for the Yankees is a wonderful present, fellas. Keep that in mind. Happy Independence Day! ... More ...

Skunk, his robots, his disco ball and the Kenny G Eliminator

Lester shut out the Yankees and I got the front of the Weekend Arts section. All is right with the world. You can read my story about Somerville artist Skunk and his wild metal sculptures right here, but you should really grab the hard copy to see the photo collage that Yoon S. Byun created to go with it. Skunk's work is currently on display at the Space 242 gallery in the South End. (At left is a Space 242 photo of Skunk's warrior robot Hathor.) ... More ...

Either report it or don’t report it. I hate this half-assed stuff.

From Amalie Benjamin’s “Minor League Notebook” today, this is how she reported on Dustin Richardson and Kyle Snyder: Pitchers Dustin Richardson (Portland) and Kyle Snyder (Pawtucket) have made rehab appearances as they work toward coming off the disabled list . . . Chock full of information, that sentence is. I know the Globe doesn’t like to focus much attention on the Minors and this Amalie spends more time focusing on one story (that of Luis Exposito, which is actuall... More ...

An All-American Win

Ken from the Fang's Bites blog here to provide the morning links on this 4th of July. I wanted to give the Fearless Leader of the BSMW, Bruce Allen, my heartfelt congratulations on the birth of his baby boy this week. Let's get to your links. Red Sox The Red Sox could not have asked for a better start to its holiday weekend four game series with the Yankees with a John Lester-pitched complete game 7-0 shutout of the Yankees in the Bronx. Gordon Edes says Lester's performance could not have come... More ...

Five Questions

by Scott Benson scott@patriotsdaily.com Five random questions while trying to think of an angle for a new post: 1. Where did the summer go?  This week we learned that the Patriots will open their 49th training camp on Thursday, July 24th in Foxborough. All due respect to the calendar and everything, but that means it's almost fall. This weekend I'll be putting away the lawn furniture and winterizing my lawnmower. Do I seem overanxious to you? 2. Did you do everything you could to elect Jim Nanc... More ...

When Grizzlies [or whatever] Attack!

Happy 4th of July to all my fellow Americans, here and abroad. And an extra special shout out to my nephew Daniel, who shipped out to Iraq last week. Yeah, his mom, my sister, and the whole family are still in shock that this war has gone on this long. Hopefully, once someone else is [...] ... More ...
